The Senate today blocked a bill that would end the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. The 57-40 vote meant that the Democrats were three votes shy of the 60 needed to pass the larger spending bill to which the repeal was attached. The GOP is holding fast to its promise to block every bill presented in the lame duck session that does not involve tax cuts or government spending. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) along with Sen. Sue Collins (R-ME) were some of the supporters of the ban to end DADT, but a crucial Collins ally, Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), caved in early on Thursday’s vote.
