Janet Napolitano: ‘The System Worked’
Robert Gibbs wasn’t the only administration official in the spotlight Sunday following the Christmas Day airline scare. On State of the Union, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano tried to calm the nerves of Americans worried about another terror attack, but she may have done just the opposite. Even though the suspect got on a plane with explosives, she says the "system worked."
Peter King: No, the System Didn't Work
The system worked, eh Janet? Not so much, says Rep. Peter King (R-NY). On Face the Nation, King jumped on Secretary Napolitano’s comments and used them as a launch pad to criticize the Obama administration for not taking the terror threat seriously. Recalling an oft-used phrase with Obama these days, he called for the president to use the incident as a "teaching moment." His not-so-calming advice: Be afraid, be very afraid.
Bickering D.C. Couple Shares Secret to Happy Marriage
Did you ever wonder how two so very different politically charged people could survive living in the same house together, let alone as a married couple? On State of the Union, James Carville and Mary Matalin let viewers in on the secret to a successful marriage, and to no surprise, they disagree on the answer.
Jake Tapper Presses Gibbs: Who’s Watching the Watch List?
The terror scare on Northwest Flight 253 has a lot of people asking a lot of questions, namely: how someone on a terror watch list could get on a plane with explosives strapped to his legs? White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs made the rounds Sunday announcing that President Obama has ordered a security review and tried to make some sense of the incident, but his explanation doesn’t seem to be working for This Week fill-in host and White House correspondent Jake Tapper.
Do We Owe Katie Couric an Apology?
Remember when all the talk about Katie Couric’s move to anchor the CBS Evening News was about her legs? Notice how Diane Sawyer wasn’t subjected to any of that? David Zurawik of the Baltimore Sun and Gail Shister of TV Newser sure have. On Reliable Sources, the two praise Diane Sawyer’s performance, and give Couric some recognition for getting too much scrutiny early on—and taking chances with the format that Sawyer quietly benefits from.
Joe Lieberman’s Prediction: Yemen May Be the New Iraq
With two recent terror incidents in the U.S. now reportedly linked to Yemen (the Fort Hood shootings and the attempted attack on Northwest Flight 253 to Detroit), the country has entered the spotlight in the war against al Qaeda. On Fox News Sunday, Sen. Joe Lieberman quoted an administration official who told him that unless the United States acts preemptively against forces in Yemen, this will be the war of “tomorrow.”
Newt Gingrich: Health-Care Reform Most Corrupt Bill in His Lifetime
Remember that health-care bill? Top Republicans have been on the offensive ever since Democrats got their act together to prevent a filibuster and successfully passed it through in the Senate with talk of “ seedy Chicago politics” and “bribery.” Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich took his criticism of the bill to new extremes Sunday on a Meet the Press roundtable, calling the bill in Senate the “most corrupt legislation I have seen in my lifetime.”
And the Biggest Winner of 2009 Is…
All right McLaughlin junkies, the day is finally yours: It’s part one of the Group’s annual awards show. No dance routines, no musical acts, just the venerable host and his stunning plaid jacket. Pat Buchanan picks a certain prominent Republican; Eleanor Clift a certain prominent Democrat; points to Monica Crowley and Clarence Page for thinking just a tiny bit out of the box, but none guess the true winner. And who or what would that be? The envelope please…
