House Democrats voted down legislation on Friday that would have allowed President Obama to advance the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade deal involving 11 Pacific Rim nations. “I will be voting to slow down fast-track,” Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said before she did just that. Democrats specifically voted to kill a program to help U.S. workers who lose their jobs thanks to trade—a “program their party created and has stood by for four decades,” The New York Times notes. Obama went to Capitol Hill on Friday morning and to the congressional softball game Thursday night to cajole Democrats. It didn’t work.
