The Detroit Public School system is not going to be able to pay for its employees after the fiscal year ends in June, according to the schools' emergency manager. Steven Rhodes, a former federal bankruptcy judge, has urged lawmakers in the city to approve a $715 million rescue initiative that would develop a Detroit Education Commission which would have control over new school openings in subsequent years. Without that package, funds for employees will essentially dry up.
