In tonight's debate, moderator Wolf Blitzer asked Mitt Romney about an ad his campaign is running in Florida that charges Newt Gingrich called Spanish "the language of the ghetto." After finally admitting that he was involved with the ad, Romney asked Gingrich, "well, did you say that?" Gingrich denied making the comment, insisting he wasn't talking about Spanish, specifically, and was simply aguing that schools should teach all kids English. So, did he say it or didn't he? In April of 2007, the Associated Press reported on speach Gingrich made in which he said, "The American people believe English should be the official language of the government...We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country, and they learn the language of prosperty, not the language of living in the ghetto." Granted, Gingrich did not specificy which language is that of the ghetto. But why, then, did he apologize for the comment in Spanish of all languages?
