Dozens of people were dead or missing following a garbage dump collapse that fell onto homes outside of Sri Lanka’s capital. Rescuers on Monday dug through trash and mud trying to save those who were still alive under the debris. At least 29 people were confirmed dead and 11 were injured following the collapse on Friday night during a celebration for the local new year. More than 150 homes were damaged. “There was a strong wind from the side of the dump, and my daughter shouted that the mound is splitting,” said auto-rickshaw driver Rasika Sanjeewa on Monday. “Suddenly, one slice of the mound came crashing down. The whole area was shaking.” When they escaped and were able to check on a friend’s home, they found the house buried and their friends, a mother and daughter, dead.
