Researchers found they can extend the life of obese mice using a drug that mimics resveratrol, the ingredient of red wine believed to activate protective proteins. Mice receiving the drug lived 44 percent longer than obese mice that were given no treatment. The research may hold hope for longevity drugs for humans—obese and otherwise. The proteins, called sirtuins, activated by the resveratrol-like drug, help bring about a 30 percent extension in life span for mice on a very low-calorie diet. Experiments with resveratrol-mimicking drugs attempt to bring those benefits to mice on a normal diet.
