What’s going on over there at the Chicago Sun Times? Roger Ebert is lavishing praise on a movie everyone hates—Death at a Funeral—and disparaging Kick-Ass, a movie other critics have lauded. Ebert awarded four and a half stars to Funeral, which stars Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, James Marsden, and Zoe Saldana, among others. He acknowledges that the movie is no art-house film: “Oh, I know a lot of Death at a Funeral is in very bad taste. That's when I laughed the most.” Labeling the film “the best comedy since The Hangover,” Ebert gushes about the “deft timing and high energy” of the cast, and praises director Neil LaBute for managing the action with “a smooth logic that works like spatial punchlines.” Ebert's love for Death doesn’t mean he’s gone soft—the critic had plenty of grief to throw Kick-Ass’s way. His review of the “everyday superhero” story began with an equally honest appeal to the audience: “Shall I have feelings, or should I pretend to be cool? Will I seem hopelessly square if I find Kick-Ass morally reprehensible and will I appear to have missed the point?”
