Egypt blocked a United National Security Council resolution that would have condemned the failed coup attempt in Turkey. The resolution, which would have asked countries to “respect the democratically elected government of Turkey,” needed unanimous consent to be approved. Some diplomats said Egypt believes the Security Council should not be determining whether a government was democratically elected.
