The Egyptian military may not be as neutral as it’s made out to be: The Guardian says the military has detained hundreds and maybe thousands of protesters over the past three weeks, and some of these detainees have been tortured. There are reports of beatings lasting several hours; “They got a bayonet and threatened to rape me with it” says one survivor. Meanwhile, Al Jazeera says 5,000 doctors and medical students are expected to join Egypt’s labor strikes on Tuesday—as well as lawyers, employees of the artists syndicate, and transport workers. Labor strikes began Wednesday, when 20,000 factory workers took to the streets.
