As many as a million people are expected to turn out in Cairo Friday for a “victory march” celebrating the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, but some of the people who fought hardest for change will not be in attendance: Egypt’s military is responsible for dozens of disappearances and at least 12 cases of torture, according to human-rights groups. “The military is detaining people incommunicado, which is illegal, and so it is effectively disappearing people,” said Human Rights Watch activist Heba Morayef. She adds that while these instances do not appear to be “systematic,” they’re “enough to set off alarm bells and call for an investigation into abuses by the military police.”
