Egypt's military-led interim government became the target of violence throughout the country Saturday after police attempted to remove protesters from Tahrir Square. The police's efforts instead riled up people from all parts of Egyptian society, provoking thousands to pour into Cairo's central square, the site that was home to mass demonstrations against former president Hosni Mubarak. Riot officers responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. The first parliamentary elections after Mubarak's ouster nine months ago is to be held in a week. Citizens are retaliating against the military's effort to circumvent the upcoming elections and give itself permanent power. According to Egyptian state media, more than 650 people have been injured in the violent clash between police and civilians, 40 of them riot officers. At least one person has been killed.
