At least eight soldiers connected to the U.S. military in Afghanistan were killed Saturday, making it the deadliest day for Western troops in almost six months. Two soldiers allegedly succumbed to gunshot wounds, while five were killed after their vehicle ran over a roadside bomb. Speaking out after the incident, the governor of the Kandahar province said the bomb had been placed in the Maiwand district. Maiwand is known as the "spiritual birthplace" of the Taliban, which announced its spring offensive last week. The attack came around the time Afghan president Hamid Karzai announced that his government has been receiving money from the CIA for more than ten years.
