An elderly man was killed on the outskirts of Paris on Sunday by an elephant that had escaped from a nearby circus. The 84-year-old victim was playing in a petanque competition when the elephant hit him with its trunk and knocked him to the ground. The man was taken to a hospital by helicopter but was later pronounced dead. The elephant, which escaped by placing a tarpaulin over an electrified fence, was quickly recaptured.
