First, it was The Tonight Show time slot, and now the two late-night funnymen may be competing for the same Emmy. Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno could be battling over an award in the Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series category—both for The Tonight Show. The Academy of Television Arts and Science’s senior VP for awards told The Wrap that both versions of The Tonight Show will be eligible for nomination. Still, even if both shows did get nominated, the production studio, not the host, normally nabs the award, meaning NBC’s Universal Media Studios would get both nominations. Despite logistics, a showing by at least the Twitter-happy O’Brien—and maybe Leno—would undoubtedly boost the award show’s flagging ratings.
