Five months after the Church of England voted to approve the ordination of female bishops, it will finally have one. On Wednesday, Libby Lane was named the first female bishop in the church’s 500-year history. The Oxford-educated Lane was ordained a deacon of the Church of England in 1993 and a priest in 1994, and she has served as dean of women in ministry for the diocese since 2010. Prime Minister David Cameron hailed the news as a “historic appointment and an important step forward for the church toward greater equality in its senior positions.” In addition to committing her life to the Anglican Communion, Lane enjoys playing the saxophone and rooting for Manchester United.
