Melissa Mathison, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, died in Los Angeles on Wednesday after an illness, her brother Dirk Mathison confirmed. She was 65. Mathison, who was married to Harrison Ford from 1983 to 2003, is survived by her two children with the actor, Malcolm and Georgia. The screenwriter had recently reunited with Steven Spielberg to write the screenplay for the Roald Dahl adaptation of The BFG, which is in post-production. “Melissa had a heart that shined with generosity and love and burned as bright as the heart she gave E.T.,” Spielberg said. Mathison also wrote screenplays for Martin Scorsese’s 1997 Kundun, The Black Stallion, and the adaptation of The Indian in the Cupboard.
