The European Union is among the many global voices hailing the diplomatic thaw between U.S. and Cuba, calling it a “historic turning point” after more than 50 years of hostility between the two nations. Referencing the fall of the Berlin Wall 25 years ago, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement, “Today another Wall has started to fall. These moves represent a victory of dialogue over confrontation.” Though European governments have been critical of Cuban human-rights abuses, the EU lifted diplomatic sanctions against Cuba in 2008 and have previously urged the U.S. to do the same.
