As the old adage goes, you can never really retire from the CIA. Robert Seldon Lady, who once served as the agency's base chief in Italy, was detained in Panama after being sentenced by an Italian court earlier this year in a 2003 abduction of a suspected Egyptian terrorist. Lady, who is now retired, and two other Americans were tried in absentia. He recieved a sentence of nine years in prison in what was the first-ever conviction against agents involved in the CIA’s rendition program. Italy and Panama don’t have an extradition treaty, so it’s unclear whether he’ll be returned to Italy. The terror suspect was taken to U.S. military bases in Italy and Germany before being returned to Egypt and later released.
