John S. Carroll, a former editor of The Los Angeles Times and Baltimore Sun, died on Sunday of Creutzfeldt-Jakob, a degenerative brain disease, in Lexington, Ky. He was 73. Carroll led the LA Times to 13 Pulitzer Prizes during his five-year tenure. Before joining the LA Times, Carroll served as a reporter at the Baltimore Sun and later as the editor helped the newspaper win two Pulitzer Prizes for "for an investigation into the dangers of shipbreaking and a series about a major league umpire's children who were dying of a genetic disease," according to the Sun.
