Seven Italian scientists found guilty of manslaughter for failing to predict a deadly earthquake had their convictions overturned Monday. An appeals court overturned the initial October 2012 ruling that the seismology and engineering experts were culpable for not predicting the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake, which killed more than 300 people. They faced six years behind bars for allegedly downplaying the risk of an earthquake. While the scientists are walking free, the prosecution could appeal to a higher court.
