Yasir Afifi, a Muslim student in California, noticed a funny wire hanging out of his car after it came back from the shop, attached to a “black, glimmering device.” Two days later, FBI agents came to his house, asked him about any “abnormal activity” he had engaged in, admitted to planting the GPS tracker, and asked for it back. Afifi says he’s not surprised that the FBI would be following him: “I’m half-Arab, a young Muslim, my dad was a religious role model for the community,” he said on Friday. “I travel overseas for work and visit my brothers in Egypt. It’s their ticket to bother me forever.” A local chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations called the situation “egregious” and an invasive “fishing expedition.”
