The Federal Bureau of Investigations is probing last week’s triple shooting and homicide in Kansas as a hate crime, the agency said on Tuesday. Adam Purinton, 51, allegedly shot two Indian men in an Olathe bar—killing one—after yelling “Get out of my country” at his victims. He also shot a white bystander who attempted to chase him down during the attack. After fleeing the scene, Purinton confided in a bartender at a local Applebee’s that he had just shot “Iranian people.” One of the surviving victims, Alok Madasani, claims the shooter asked him and his friend—Srinivas Kuchibholta; who died from his injuries—if they were in the United States illegally. In a statement, the FBI said it is working jointly with the Olathe Police Department, in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. A White House spokesperson additionally commented: “The president condemns these and any other racially and religiously motivated attacks in the strongest terms.”
