FCC Moves Closer to Two-Lane Web

The Federal Communications Commission took the next step towards allowing Internet providers to charge some sites a premium for using their services. In a 3-2 vote Tuesday, the FCC advanced a proposal that would allow providers like Verizon and AT&T to charge websites like Netflix for flawless video streaming. Consumer advocates charge that such a proposal will leave people with poorer Internet quality and will squeeze out smaller tech companies while favoring larger corporations, like Google and Facebook. The vote is not final, and the FCC will now open the plan to 120 days of public comment before the next vote.
