The FCC passed so-called net neutrality rules on Tuesday that will, for the first time, give teh government the power to regulate the internet. So is it a victory for the “open Internet”? It’s hard to say. The FCC is going to create two classes of Internet access: broadband providers will be prevented from blocking sites, while wireless providers like Verizon and AT&T will be able to block applications and services.” And it appears that even the broadband rules are so ridden with loopholes that interest groups are calling it “fake net neutrality.” Legal or congressional challenges could derail the action, which is set to be implemented early next year.
