After a ton of recent bad press, the NYPD had some good news to announce on Sunday: It had arrested a Dominican-born man suspected of plotting terrorist attacks. But was he really a threat? The FBI chose not to join the NYPD’s investigation because it felt the suspect, Jose Pimentel, didn’t pose much of a threat, sources tell Reuters. Furthermore, the FBI was worried about the NYPD’s use of a confidential informant who might have played too large a role in helping Pimentel by giving him a place to build pipe bombs. According to The New York Times, Pimentel may have been less the terrorist “lone wolf” the NYPD made him out to be and more an unhinged person: sources say he tried to circumcise himself.
