Sprout Pharmaceuticals, the company responsible for the “female Viagra” drug Addyi, will be acquired by Valeant Pharmaceuticals for $1 billion. Addyi was approved to be prescribed to increase the libido of premenopausal women. Sprout has only 34 employees and $100 million has been invested in the company since its 2011 inception. Valeant officials say they hope to make the Addyi available by the fourth quarter of the fiscal year. Questions remain about the safety and effectiveness of the drug, particularly the fact that its combination with alcohol can lead to drastic low blood pressure and fainting.
