Several roads in Atlanta were shut down late Thursday after a fire caused an overpass on Interstate 85 to collapse. As firefighters battled the blaze beneath the highway, troopers turned away cars trying to use the overpass. The bridge collapsed minutes later. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but Gov. Nathan Deal told reporters that he’d heard “some PVC products” had caught on fire. “I do not know why they did or what the source of their transport was. But those are questions that will hopefully be answered at least by tomorrow morning,” he said. As of Thursday evening, authorities said the fire was contained and they did not expect it to spread. But I-85 has been shut down in both directions “for the foreseeable future,” the Georgia Department of Transportation said. No injuries were reported in the incident.
