The rise of structured settlements for cognitively impaired people, such as those exposed to lead in in early childhood, has given rise to a shady industry that buys the rights to those payments for a small portion of their value. The Washington Post reported on the case of one woman whose estimated total of $573,615 in lead payments was purchased by a company for a mere $62,637. The company claims it had no idea the woman was cognitively impaired, though she can barely read or write. She says they promised her family a vacation and misrepresented the sale.
