Flea: Our Guitars Were Unplugged

No need to speculate any longer. Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea wrote an open letter explaining that the band's instruments weren't connected to amps during the Super Bowl halftime show. "When we were asked by the NFL and Bruno to play our song 'Give It Away' at the Super Bowl, it was made clear to us that the vocals would be live, but the bass, drums and guitar would be pre-recorded," he wrote. Flea added that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are normally opposed to "any sort of miming," but agreed to do it and decided not to pretend they were plugged in. "It was like making a music video in front of a gazillion people," he wrote.
