Howard Baker, the former Republican Senate majority leader from Tennessee, died on Thursday, his law firm announced. Baker, who was 88, became famous after questioning President Richard Nixon at the 1973 Watergate hearings, asking “What did the president know and when did he know it?” He later served as chief of staff to President Ronald Reagan, a U.S. Ambassador to Japan, and, in 1984, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
