Got any Friday night plans? Despite the cast list reading like a dream—Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Ashley Judd—the new film Crossing Over, which opens today, is getting worse reviews than the Jonas Brothers 3-D extravaganza. Ford does his steely gaze shtick as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent in the interconnected immigration saga that contains “all the political insight of a sociology freshman railing against The Man,” wrote typically friendly NPR. The film’s storytelling device—following a dozen characters and charting their interactions—mimics that of Crash and Babel, but with none of the insights of either. “Overwrought,” “banal,” and containing “impromptu speechifying and didactic expressions of liberal guilt” it might be best to—er, cross on over to another theatre.
