For years, Italian authorities have been trying to crack down on art-world criminals; this week they’ve made 12 arrests in conjunction with a forgery ring. Their deceptive pieces of art—based on pieces by Matisse, Magritte, Teofili Patini, and Guido Reni—total in the millions of dollars in fraudulent sales, mostly online, but some via major auction houses, including Sotheby’s. The purchasing collectors were apparently none the wiser.
