While policymakers in Washington and other Western capitals debate withdrawal from Afghanistan, the war there continues to claim a human toll. NATO said that four soldiers under its command were killed in two separate incidents Tuesday in eastern Afghanistan. Three of the fatalities, whose names and nationalities have not been released, died when an improvised roadside bomb went off, while a fourth was killed in an attack elsewhere. The deaths, which bring the year’s allied toll to 280, come as forces undertake a shift from fighting in Taliban strongholds in the south toward the eastern area, which borders Pakistan and is seen as a haven for Al Qaeda–linked militants.
