The French far-right National Front (FN) party made historic gains in the first round of regional elections Sunday, securing at least six of the 13 regions in mainland France. On the heels of the Paris attacks that left 130 people dead, Marine Le Pen’s FN won 29.4 percent of the vote nationally, with more than 85 percent of the votes counted—marking the highest percentage ever for the anti-Europe and anti-immigration party. Former President Nicolas Sarkozy’s center-right Republicans party appeared to be in second place ahead of President François Hollande’s Socialist Party. A second round will be held Dec. 13.
