Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi’s forces scattered antitank landmines in Misrata Thursday night—near the city’s only supply route in and out. The landmines were delivered by a Chinese-made variant of a Grad rocket, which opens in flight and drops mines to the ground, said munitions experts who saw photos of the bombs. The mines hit the port around 9 or 10 p.m. Thursday night just after rockets were heard hitting the city from the southeast. Witnesses said at least 20 mines were distributed in the attack, and at least 13 were observed firsthand, but that number has not been verified. Whether there have been arms sales between China and Libya was not immediately clear, nor was it clear how the Libyan government got the mines and rockets.
