The son of the former dictator of Libya was released from prison on Friday after nearly six years. Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the late Muammar Gaddafi, had been held by rebels in the western Libyan town of Zintan since November 2011, after being captured while attempting to flee to Niger after the fall of Tripoli during the Libyan Revolution. The most high-profile of Gaddafi’s eight children, Saif al-Islam studied at the London School of Economics before joining his father’s regime, and was released under an amnesty agreement negotiated between the rebels and the ruling parliament that controls eastern Libya. Since Gaddafi’s death, the country has endured a civil war that has not yet been resolved.
