Members of a drug gang arrested for the disappearance of 43 college students in Mexico City confessed to investigators that they killed the students and incinerated their bodies in a pyre of tires and branches, according to an announcement by the attorney general on Friday. Suspects led investigators to the burnt remains. They will be tested for identification at a laboratory in Austria. The attorney general signaled that the government’s working theory is that students were attacked by corrupt police officers on Sept. 26 and turned over to criminals who killed them. Relatives of the victims were not ready to accept the news, however, with some accusing President Enrique Peña Nieto of staging an arrest and confession in order to conclude the case before his planned trip to Asia this weekend (Mexican government has a history of forced confessions and staged arrests).
