President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Gen. John Kelly to be the next secretary of Homeland Security, multiple outlets reported on Wednesday. The choice of Kelly follows Trump’s appointment of Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn to be national security adviser, and the nomination of Gen. James Mattis as defense secretary. Kelly was previously the leader of U.S. Southern Command, and oversaw operations in Iraq. He was also a top aide to former Secretaries of Defense Robert Gates and Leon Panetta. Kelly’s son, Marine Lt. Robert Michael Kelly, was killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2010. Milwaukee Sheriff David A. Clarke, a frequent and highly controversial Fox News guest, was also rumored to be considered for the top post.
