Georgia on Friday executed 60-year-old John Wayne Conner for beating a friend to death in 1982. Conner was the sixth inmate to be executed in Georgia this year. He made no statement before being executed and declined to have a prayer read for him. Lawyers for Conner had argued that the death penalty would constitute cruel and unusual punishment in his case, and that he had suffered from a mental impairment as a result of growing up in an abusive household.
