Australia's Socceroos were no match for Germany, the indomitable three-time World Cup champions. The Aussies lost 4-0, with Germany scoring two goals in first half and two others in the second. In the first 30 minutes of play, Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose sank two goals, and Thomas Mueller and Cacau played the team to victory scoring two more thereafter. The Germans have not lost a single World Cup opener since their 1982 2-1 showdown with Algeria. Earlier today, Ghana sneaked by Serbia, 1-0, to become the first African nation to win at the 2010 World Cup. In Sunday’s first game, however, Algeria was not so fortunate. A goalkeeping gaffe in the 79th minute gifted Slovenia a 1-0 victory, meaning the European side goes to the top of the United States’ group. Slovenia and the U.S. will face off on Friday in what could make or break the Americans’ chances of progressing to the next round.
