That’s gotta leave a mark. In an interview with Fusion TV on Wednesday, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) criticized Republican Sen. John McCain for his opposition to her bill, which would move responsibility for military sexual-assault investigations outside the chain of command. “I respect Sen. McCain and we are friends, but with all due respect to him, he was wrong about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and he was wrong about sexual assault in the military,” Gillibrand said. The senator and her supporters would like to see the investigations handed over to an independent commission. “There is a growing chorus of military leaders who have even more experience than Sen. McCain who are saying, ‘This should be taken out of the chain of command,’” she says.
