A 9-year-old girl in South Africa who was diagnosed with HIV shortly after she was born has kept her infection suppressed and been in remission for more than eight years without any anti-HIV medication. If her remission lasts, experts say her case is evidence that early treatment can cause a long remission that could work as a cure. The child’s case was discussed at an AIDS conference in Paris on Monday. The girl, who was not identified, does not have the gene mutation that provides natural resistance to the virus, meaning her remission was likely caused by the early treatment while she was an infant.
