NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell apparently stopped investigating the Ray Rice domestic-violence incident because, after a meeting with the Rices, he came away with the conclusion that Janay Rice became unconscious because she fell during the scuffle. Goodell thought it insensitive to question Janay Rice’s story because it would have reflected badly on her character, according to two people familiar with the commissioner’s thinking who spoke to The Wall Street Journal. Goodell’s decision came despite an initial police report that described Ray Rice’s attack, when he attempted to “cause bodily injury to J. Palmer, specifically by striking her with his hand, rendering her unconscious while at the Revel Casino.”
