Sunday night was so violent that Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon called for the National Guard to help bring order to Ferguson. Accounts of Molotov cocktails, shootings, and looting Sunday night precipitated the governor's announcement. At one point during the night, a McDonald's was so overwhelmed with protesters that its workers took shelter. Three people were injured as a result, and seven to eight were arrested. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowds, which authorities said were not local residents. In his executive order calling for the National Guard, Gov. Nixon said the soldiers were needed “given these deliberate, coordinated and intensifying violent attacks on lives and property in Ferguson.”
