Albert Maysles, the documentarian behind Grey Gardens and the Rolling Stones feature Gimme Shelter, died Thursday of natural causes at age 88. Along with his brother David, who died in 1987, Maysles earned an Oscar nomination in 1974 for the documentary short Christo’s Valley Curtain and an Emmy in 1987 for Vladimir Horowitz: The Last Romantic. At the of his death, Maysles had amassed 74 credits as cinematographer and 49 as director or co-director.
