Guinea’s last known Ebola patient was discharged from a treatement center in the capital city of Conakry, health officials said Monday. The results of two tests on the 19-day-old baby came back negative, said Fode Tass Sylla, a spokesman for Guinea’s Ebola coordination unit. Guinea, the only country still fighting the recent Ebola outbreak, will be declared officially free of the virus as long as no new cases are reported in the next six weeks. The epidemic is believed to have emerged in a forested region of Guinea in December 2013 and has killed more than 11,000 people in West Africa. Nearby Sierra Leone and Liberia, two of the countries that were also hit the hardest, have already been declared Ebola-free.
