An 1886 Winchester rifle with a walnut stock and blue finish has set a new record for a single firearm sold at auction fetching $1.265 million. The piece went to an anonymous buyer. It was originally a gift to U.S. Army Captain Henry Ware Lawton from Lieutenant George E. Albee who had fought together in the Civil War. While Lawton went on to fight in the Spanish American War, Albee would go on to design weapons for the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The gun in question is serial number 1 for that year.
