Hackers have repeatedly accessed the computer network of the company that owns the NASDAQ Stock Market, leading to a federal investigation attempting to identify the perpetrators and their motives. The government has reacted with alarm, since it considers the network part of the nation's basic infrastructure along with power companies and air-traffic controllers. Possible motives include illegal financial gain, theft of trade secrets, or an attempt to sabotage the exchange. But the hackers didn't do much to tip off investigators about their motives: so far, they have not accessed NASDAQ's exchange platform, and appear to only have looked around.
