Jace Lacob reports: The Queen no longer: Mirren appeared at Comic-Con Thursday to promote her new movie, Red. "It was great to have guns instead of words," she said. The first day of Comic-Con included appearances from action stars such as Angelina Jolie and Bruce Willis—and the former Queen. Mirren turned up to promote her upcoming action film Red, based on a graphic novel by Warren Ellis, alongside Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, and Karl Urban. Mirren played to the crowd by donning a Harvey Pekar memorial T-shirt, celebrating the late writer/artist of American Splendor, whom she credited with turning her on to the fact that "graphic novels could be so deeply personal." Mirren's comics-friendly appearance was an unexpected twist for a panel that quickly became a favorite, as it featured a new trailer for the film, in which Mirren and others—including John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman—return from retirement to find out who is attempting to have them killed. Mirren admitted that working with Willis and Parker in Red (where she plays a retired CIA wetworks expert) was "intimidating," but relished the opportunity to reach a new audience, saying, "the kind of people who go see this are not the people who see movies about Tolstoy." But the Academy Award winner said she was more than up for the challenge of ditching her royal image to play with the boys: "It was great to have guns instead of words," she said with a throaty laugh.
